Bollard Material Selection Guide: Stainless Steel Grades and Protective Finishes
The material of a retractable bollard determines how long it will last, how it looks over years of service, and how much maintenance it needs. Because every site has different exposure to weather, salt, chemicals and abrasion, there is no single best material. This guide breaks down the common options and how to match them to the conditions around your entrance.
Why the Material Matters
A bollard is exposed to the elements around the clock. Sun, rain, snow, road salt, salt spray, dust and vehicle impacts all act on its surface. The right material resists corrosion, keeps its finish and protects the mechanism inside. The wrong material can show rust, fading or pitting within the first few years. Because the bollard is embedded in the ground, replacing it is disruptive, so choosing the material up front is important.
The Main Material Options
- 304 stainless steel: the most common grade for bollards and street furniture. It resists corrosion in most urban environments, is easy to polish to a bright or brushed finish, and is widely available.
- 316 stainless steel: adds molybdenum, which makes it more resistant to chlorides and salt. This is the grade to consider for coastal sites, harsh winters with road salt, and chemical-heavy environments.
- Carbon steel with a protective finish: a carbon steel core coated with hot-dip galvanizing and a powder coat. It is strong and good for load-bearing columns, and the finish can be coloured to match architecture, but it relies on the coating staying sound.

When Carbon Steel with a Protective Finish Makes Sense
A carbon steel bollard with a galvanized layer and a durable powder coat serves well in many applications. It is a common choice when a specific architectural colour is required, when the installation is well protected from salt and sea air, or when the column carries high loads. Because the protection depends on the coating, the bollard should be handled carefully during installation to avoid scratches that could start corrosion.
Surface Finishes Explained
- Brushed (satin) finish: a fine texture that hides minor scratches and gives a modern industrial look. It is the most widely used finish for stainless steel bollards.
- Mirror polish: a highly reflective surface that looks premium but shows scratches and fingerprints more readily.
- Powder coating: a coloured, baked-on paint layer applied over galvanized or stainless steel. It allows the bollard to match handrails, gates and building trim.
- Hot-dip galvanizing: a thick zinc coating applied to carbon steel for a very long service life, usually finished with a powder coat on top.
Matching the Material to Your Site
- Coastal and seaport sites: choose 316 stainless steel, as salt spray is the main cause of corrosion.
- Cold climates with road salt: choose 316 stainless steel, or carbon steel with a sound galvanized and powder-coated finish.
- Industrial and chemical environments: confirm the grade against the specific chemicals present on site.
- Inland city and campus sites: 304 stainless steel usually provides the service life you need with a clean, low-maintenance appearance.
Specification Checklist
- State the bollard diameter and the visible height required.
- State the material grade and the finish, and ask for a material certificate.
- For coastal or high-salt sites, request 316 stainless steel explicitly.
- Match the colour of the finish to the surrounding architecture if it matters to you.
- Confirm that the surface finish is applied after fabrication for a consistent coating.
