School Security Bollards: Protecting Students and Staff
The Growing Need for School Perimeter Security
Schools are increasingly aware that vehicle access points are their most vulnerable boundaries. The morning rush, afternoon pickup, and special events all create predictable patterns of vehicles, pedestrians, and children converging at the same gates. A complete vehicle access control solution at the school entrance combines multiple devices working together: sliding gates, license plate recognition, automatic bollards, barrier gates, pedestrian turnstiles, and face recognition equipment. Each device covers one layer, and the bollard provides the final physical barrier that no electronic system can replace.
School Entrance: The Vehicle Screening Zone
The main entrance is the highest-risk point of the campus. The recommended configuration combines automatic rising bollards with license plate recognition and a sliding gate:
- License plate recognition cameras identify authorized vehicles (staff, school buses, registered deliveries) automatically, so drivers do not need to stop
- Fully automatic rising bollards (YC-01) rise to block unauthorized vehicles and lower for authorized ones; the 600 mm lift height and 3-5 second cycle keep traffic flowing during peak hours
- Sliding gates and barrier gates manage the pedestrian and vehicle channels, and a small grid gate provides a separate staff entrance
- Face recognition columns and turnstiles screen people entering the campus

Pedestrian Plaza: The Vehicle Exclusion Zone
Pedestrian plazas, courtyards, and pathways between buildings must permanently exclude vehicles while remaining open to students, staff, and bicycles. Fixed bollards (YC-04) create a permanent physical barrier that requires no power, no maintenance effort, and remains effective around the clock. Made of 304 stainless steel with reflective warning bands, they resist corrosion and wear while staying simple to install and maintain. For areas that occasionally need vehicle access for events or maintenance, semi-automatic bollards (YC-03) with key operation provide the same protection with the option to lower when authorized staff need to pass.
Pick-Up and Drop-Off Zones: Traffic Management Area
Pick-up and drop-off zones change their function every day: busy vehicle traffic in the morning and afternoon, pedestrian crossings in between, and special events on weekends. Movable bollards (YC-05) are the flexible answer. Installed at only 160-300 mm depth with an IP68-rated body, they can be removed and stowed when vehicle access is needed and reinstalled for temporary control. Their 219 mm column and 600 mm height provide effective deterrence, and the 6 mm wall thickness ensures long service life.
Shallow-Mount Options for Restricted Campuses
Many school sites have complex underground pipe networks for water, drainage, power, and communication cables. Where deep excavation is not possible, the shallow-mount bollard series is the practical solution. Its square shallow foundation is designed for restricted construction, avoiding underground pipes while still providing automatic or semi-automatic control. Confirm the site survey results with the factory to select the correct model.
Intelligent Control Integration
All bollards on campus should be managed by one control system. The standard control box manages 1-8 bollards; multi-channel systems control 18 or more with group control and an emergency lowering module. The controller works at 220 V with a 24 V control voltage and provides reserved interfaces for card readers and ground loop detectors, so it integrates directly with the license plate recognition system, access control, and vehicle detection at the entrance. The IP66-rated control cabinet is safe for outdoor installation, and the EPS emergency power module guarantees that bollards lower safely during a power failure.
Integration examples: when the license plate recognition system grants access, the bollard lowers automatically and the sliding gate opens; when the gate closes and the vehicle passes the ground loop detector, the bollard rises again. Authorized staff can override any channel remotely from the security office.
Emergency Response
A school security system must never impede emergency response. Fire lanes and ambulance routes must stay open at all times:
- Emergency lowering of every bollard from the central control panel or via the EPS emergency power module
- Manual key release on semi-automatic and movable bollards as a failsafe
- Fire lane bollards clearly marked and coordinated with the campus evacuation plan
