Why Spacing and Layout Matter
The spacing and layout of your rising bollards are just as important as the bollard itself. Correct spacing controls vehicle access reliably, keeps pedestrian flow comfortable, and protects the bollard and its foundation from damage. Poorly planned layout either creates gaps a vehicle can exploit or blocks legitimate traffic. This guide gives you the key dimensions and patterns the Guardix team uses when planning an installation.
Key Dimensions to Consider First
- Bollard column diameter: typically 133-219 mm, which affects visual presence and the physical barrier.
- Rising height: usually 600-900 mm above ground, the physical stop for a vehicle bumper.
- Vehicle width and turning: the widest authorised vehicle and its approach angle.
- Pedestrian channel width: comfortable for a wheelchair, stroller, or shopping cart.
- Foundation depth: deep foundations for standard models, shallow-mount for restricted ground.
Spacing for Vehicle Control
When bollards are the physical barrier for vehicle access, center-to-center spacing is driven by the vehicle you need to stop and the gap you need to keep closed. As a general guideline, effective vehicle-control spacing is based on the width of the passage you want to permit and the approach speed. Two bollards with a center-to-center distance that leaves an opening wider than the vehicle you are screening defeats the purpose. Confirm the maximum authorised vehicle width and set the clear opening accordingly.
For high-security entrances, a single wide bollard or a closely spaced pair is preferred over a large opening, because a larger gap raises the risk during approach. For industrial or logistics gates that must admit container trucks, the opening must match the required vehicle envelope plus a small safety margin.
Spacing for Pedestrian and Mixed Traffic
Where pedestrians share the zone, leave a comfortable passing width between bollards. A practical guideline is a clear passage wide enough for a wheelchair or stroller to pass comfortably without forcing a detour, while still stopping bicycles and small vehicles. Remember that bollards are there to stop vehicles, not to inconvenience people - the clear opening should be generous enough for authorized users and narrow enough to block unauthorized vehicles.
Common Layout Patterns
- Single row: the simplest approach for a straight entrance or perimeter line.
- Double row: used at high-traffic entrances for redundancy and stronger visual control.
- L-shaped or staggered: helps slow vehicles and directs flow at corners and driveways.
- Combined with a gate or barrier: bollards complement sliding gates, traffic barriers, and boom barriers to create a full control point.
- Point protection: bollards placed to shield specific assets such as an entrance column, storefront, or building corner.
Distance from Walls, Curbs, and Underground Utilities
Keep a safe clearance between each bollard and nearby structures. The foundation must not interfere with underground cables, pipes, or drainage. Always request an existing-utilities survey before excavation. Also allow clearance from curbs and walls so the bollard rises and lowers without obstruction and so maintenance access remains practical. Edge distance should be confirmed with the factory for each model based on its foundation design.
How to Plan the Number of Bollards
Start from the entry scenario. Count the traffic lanes and pedestrian channels at each entrance, then decide the width of each opening and the spacing between bollards. Sketch the layout, mark the clear openings and the center-to-center distances, and confirm the total count against the required control level. A common practice is to size the layout from the actual vehicle envelope and access pattern rather than from a fixed rule, because every site differs.
Integration with Access Control
Position bollards to work with the rest of the control system. License plate recognition cameras, card readers, and remote controls should be placed where they can see and trigger the right bollard. Leave proper clearance for the control cabinet, and consider a manual override for emergency and maintenance access. Coordinating the bollard layout with the access-control design from the start avoids rework later.
